English 91:  Prep College Writing I

To prepare students for the academically rigorous reading, writing, and critical thinking required at the college level, we support the use of integrated assignments which achieve the following, as advocated by The Washington Center:

  • make use of "complex, real-world readings and topics"  (no strictly modal essays  like process, compare/contrast, classification, etc.)
  • "intentionally develop students' understanding and abilities based on contemporary issues"
  • are intellectually rigorous, engaging, relevant"
  • "have high expectations"
  • foster "collaborative construction of knowledge"
  • involve "public presentation of work"
